Most parents probably wonder, “Is Wrestling the right sport for my child?” Allow me to share my personal perspective with you, as a mom to three extremely active and highly competitive boys (ages fourteen, twelve, and nine) who all love the sport.
Understandably, wrestling can be intimidating due to the extreme physical contact involved. My children have been involved in the sports for about two years now, but I still cringe to this day while watching them engage in a match, be it at open mat practice or tournaments. As parents (a mother, most especially,) it is in our instinct to protect our children from being hurt, emotionally and physically. Believe me, wrestling is both equally deleterious. I have watched enough wrestlers (both beginners and well-seasoned) take serious beatings during a match and some cry during, after, even before the whistle blows. Truth is, wrestling is a sport that is won by both physically wearing down and mentally breaking the opponent.
BUT it takes A LOT to become a competitive wrestler. One must put himself through tough physical rigor, maintain a healthy diet, and develop a concise mindset to practice self-discipline. Wrestlers are trained to be aggressive, relentless, and tenacious because wrestlers do not compete just to win. They do their best to become champions. One must genuinely love the sport to be able to keep up.
So I asked my kids--- why wrestling? Their answer, “Because it is FUN!” My wild guess is wrestling provides an outlet for the natural human instinct that kids love--- roughhousing!
And then I ask myself and fellow wrestling parents--- why wrestling? Why do we subject ourselves to long trips (and costly hotel bills) to attend out of town (sometimes even state) tournaments only to watch our children get beat up on the mat and emotionally gets shaken after losing from an opponent? Because wrestling provides our children these important life lessons that no other sports can:
- Hard work beats talent. As long as your athlete is willing to work hard, he/she can be successful at wrestling with no limit to what he/she can achieved compared to other sports that require certain physical criterion (ie. height, weight, etc.)
- Wrestling promotes perseverance. Not only does the sport makes an athlete look tough physically. It also pushes him/her mentally to get going and fight to the finish.
- It helps build confidence yet teaches humility. Wrestlers are paired with opponents who weighs the same during matches, no matter the experience. Well-seasoned athletes can be beaten by rookies, which can be a humbling experience.
- Wrestling teaches accountability. Though wrestlers rely on their team during practices, they are on their own during live matches. Therefore, giving them full responsibility of how they handle their fight against their opponent. No other teammate is accountable for a win or a loss from a match.
Now you ask yourself--- is wrestling for my kid? There’s only one way to find out--- TRY IT!
